Fortnite chests opened: how to check your total in Treasure Hunters

The number sits in the Quests tab, and this is where to look. It tracks your chest quests and XP and has nothing to do with when the Pirate Shop token drops.

Quick answer

From the lobby, go into Quests, scroll the left-hand list down to Treasure Hunt and pick it. Your chests opened total is in there. It follows the chest quests that pay out XP, and it says nothing about when the Pirate Shop token will drop.

Fortnite doesn’t show a chest count while you play. There’s no number in the corner and no toggle in the settings, so after a weekend of sprinting between chests on Crossbones Isle the only way to find out how many you’ve opened is to go and look it up in a menu. (I checked the settings menu first. Nothing in there.)

It takes about ten seconds once you know where it lives, and then the number is either satisfying or depressing depending on how your token hunt is going.

Where to find your chests opened total

The count sits with the season’s quests, so you start from the main lobby screen and go through the Quests tab.

  1. Head to the lobby and open Quests.
  2. Look at the list on the left and scroll down.
  3. Select Treasure Hunt to open the category.
  4. Read your chests opened total in there.

Treasure Hunters is the season, Treasure Hunt is the quest category. Epic gave them nearly the same name, so you want the one without the “ers” on the end.

What the Treasure Hunt quests ask for

That same category holds the chest quests, which is where the number earns its keep. You’re asked to open 25 Treasure Chests, 2 Rare Chests and 2 Sprite Chests, and there’s a map fragment to grab at The $.$. Rocky for 10,000 XP. None of it has to happen in a single match, so you can chip away at it whenever you land somewhere with a few chests.

The XP matters more than it sounds like it should. It pushes the Treasure Hunters Battle Pass along, and that’s the one reward in this whole chest business you can actually count on. I’d watch those progress bars and treat the total as a bit of trivia.

Chests opened and the Pirate Shop token

The count won’t get you the Pirate Shop token, whatever you’ve read. No chest total guarantees it, and any milestone you see quoted as the magic number isn’t real. The token is a random drop. Epic hasn’t printed the odds and has said all players get the same shot at it.

One player posted that theirs showed up on chest number 37. It can also stay missing after a thousand chests, and the next one is no more likely to pay out for the lucky player than for the unlucky one. Any chest can drop it as well, so walking past the ordinary ones to look for a fancy one is wasted effort.

Squad chest openings and XP

XP for opening a chest goes to whoever opened it. If a teammate pops one, they get the XP and you get a good view of their back.

The token plays by different rules. When anyone in your squad finds Pirate Shop access, everyone gets it, and it stays on your account even if you’ve been eliminated by the time it lands. So I’d split up, open your own chests for the XP and let the squad share the token luck. Four people opening chests is four rolls on the one thing you can’t control.

How to open more chests

There’s no cap on how many you can open, and Crossbones Isle has hundreds of them, so it mostly comes down to where you land. What those chests can pay out each week is a separate question.

Vaults are the best chest value on the island. Inside each one you’ll find a Sprite Chest and three Rare Chests, so they’re worth a detour for the Rare and Sprite quests above. You need a vault key to get in, and keys are random drops. They come out of regular chests, you can take one off a player you eliminate, and levelling the Sweet Dreams Sprite can hand you one. Equipping the Chester Sprite can improve your odds of a key when you open chests. Equip a key and the vault it opens shows up on your minimap, so there’s no guessing.

Use the key quickly. Anyone who eliminates you can take it off you, the same way you’d take one off them.

That’s about all there is to the counter. Keep opening chests for the quests and let the token turn up whenever it feels like it.
