Quick answer

Forge, who camps at the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost, unlocks weapon upgrades when you talk to her. After that you upgrade from any bell. Every weapon levels on its own and picks up a perk at level 5, then again at 10, 15 and 25. Up to level 10 you can take back all the Remnant Dust and materials for free, so test weapons inside that range. Past level 10 a refund costs a Weapon Reforge Talisman, or a Phantom Reforge Talisman for Phantom Edges.

The game is generous with new weapons and strict about where you stop upgrading them. Level 10 is the line. Stay under it while you are still deciding, because everything past it needs an item to undo.

How to unlock weapon upgrades

Forge is stationed at the Outpost, a camp in Weeping Creek Valley, the first region. Talk to her once. After that, every bell has an Upgrade Equipment menu, and you never walk back to her. The weapon rack next to her holds Sanguine Reach, a two-handed weapon you can grab while you are there.

How levels and perks work

Each weapon has its own level. Raising Sanguine does nothing for Sanguine Twin. The same goes for Phantom Edges, which level separately from your main weapons. The first perk lands at level 5, and more follow at 10, 15 and 25. Check what the next one adds before you spend anything.

Upgrades cost Remnant Dust plus a metal that depends on the weapon class, and Solvent, which comes in tiers:

Weapon typeMetal you need
One-handedForged Metal
Two-handedBroadplate Metal
Dual-wieldTwinned Metal
Phantom EdgesTheir own materials for each of the Destructive, Ranged, Martial, Artifice and Summoning groups

Chests, enemy drops and bell shops all supply these. The upgrade screen names the exact tier it wants, so read it before you go looking.

Refunds and the level 10 rule

Take a weapon from level 1 to 10 and you can undo all of it for free, with every Remnant Dust and material returned. Levels 5 and 10 are the two checkpoints that matter. They show you the first two perks, which is usually enough to judge whether a weapon suits you.

Level 11 and above. Going back needs a Weapon Reforge Talisman for a main weapon or a Phantom Reforge Talisman for a Phantom Edge. Reforging resets the weapon to level 1 and gives back what you put in.

Reforging covers regular levels only. A Soul Temper stays on the weapon, and the talisman does not return the unique material you used.

Which weapons to try first

You start with Sanguine, a balanced one-handed sword, and the tutorial sword Wooden Sanguine. Two more are close by. Sanguine Reach sits on the rack beside Forge, and Sanguine Twin is on a rack on the forest trail once you have met Yu’er. That gives you one weapon from each class before you commit.

Check the perks as well as the class. Outlaw Warblade restores health as you land hits. The Tianxuan Bronze Sword makes blocking cost less Sha-Chi, and in return it switches parrying off. If your parry stops working after a weapon swap, that perk is the reason. A parry build wants a different sword, and the Gold-Masked One is a good fight to find out on.
